Getting used to the beginning of the school year can be difficult, especially after a summer of relaxation and fun. One of my key tips is to find a balance between all of your activities, school work, and down time, so that you don’t find yourself getting unnecessarily stressed out.
One thing that you will need to begin getting used to again is school work. Staying organized and on top of your homework will keep your life less stressful and will allow you to plan out your weeks more easily. This way, when something like a dance competition is around the corner, you know what you need to get out of the way beforehand. But keep in mind that if there is no way for you to finish everything before the big event it is ok to ask your teachers for extensions. Just make sure you only do this when you really need to, you don’t make it a habit, and you ask beforehand to avoid any conflict. Teachers are usually very good about accommodating your needs.
On the other hand, when your school work becomes overbearing with all of your activities looming over your shoulder, it is ok to miss a practice or two. You may not feel like it all the time, but your education is extremely important and needs time dedicated to it. If you do need miss a game or practice, try not to miss the most important of the season.
Another important aspect of living a balanced life is understanding that while you need time to hang out with your friends, you need to take time for yourself. This time could be used for reading a new book, doing art, or pampering yourself with a relaxing spa night. No matter how you spend it, your down time is for you and you alone, so make the most of it.
After every one of your long days it is extremely important to get a good night's sleep. Maintaining a proper sleep schedule and getting at least 8 hours of sleep every night will give your body the time it needs to heal and grow. When you get a good sleep, your days will be much more productive and it will be easier to find the motivation to do what you need to. As well, sleep keeps your immune system in check and will help you avoid sickness.
Stress is actually a fight or flight reaction in the body that releases chemicals and hormones to begin to fight when the body thinks it is under attack. By avoiding stress, your hormonal levels will remain in check and your life in general will feel far more balanced.
Even doing something as small as drinking 8 glasses of water a day will keep you hydrated, allow your body to regulate temperature more easily, and will help nutrients circulate around your body more easily.
